I am for the second time studying Denise Glenn’s book titled Wisdom for Mothers. Because every so often, when I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing, this book (and the group of mommies we study it with) is my mom school.
And as I re-read the book I will be sharing nuggets that jump at me.
The first is these rules for rearing children that Denise shares, which she got from Suzanna Wesley, mother of John and Charles Wesley. I chose those that resonated with me:
1. Teach a child to pray as soon as he can speak.
2. Require all to be still during family worship.
3.Give them nothing they cry for, and only that which they ask for politely.
4. To prevent lying, punish no fault which is first confessed and repented.
5. Never allow to a sinful act to go unpunished.
6. Never punish a child twice for a single offense.
7. Commend and reward good behaviour.
8. Any attempt to please, even if poorly, should be commended.
9.Preserve property rights, even in smallest matters.
10. Strictly observe all promises.
Remember, your job as a mother is to be a trainer, not an entertainer. Your child’s character development is more important than his comfort. – Denise Glenn.
